Defect

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid vehicles. The sliding glass panel of the power moonroof assembly may have been improperly bonded to the sliding frame, allowing the glass panel to detach from the vehicle.

Risk / consequence

A detached glass panel may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect the power moonroof glass panel for proper adhesion and, if necessary, replace the glass panel assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 24, 2026. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRF-26. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning May 29, 2026.

Chronology of events

  1. Feb 26, 2026

    February 26, 2026 – Subaru received a technical report where the power moonroof glass panel had become detached from the vehicle. Subaru opened an investigation.

  2. Feb 26, 2026

    February 26, 2026 – The supplier inspected all assemblies under their control and found no issues with the bonding.

  3. Mar 1, 2026

    March 1, 2026 - The supplier’s investigation indicated that power moonroof assemblies with improper bonding between the glass and the glass frame may have been manufactured. March through end-April 2026 – Subaru and the supplier used the supplier’s production records, including primer application volume logs, to determine the affected scope. This evaluation also determined the estimated minimum amount of primer that must be applied to ensure appropriate adhesion. During this period, an appropriate field inspection method was developed and evaluated, specifically confirming that the glass panel would not detach if primer application was limited to the areas accessible for visible inspection.

  4. May 21, 2026

    May 21, 2026 – Out of an abundance of caution, Subaru decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. Subaru is only aware of 3 technical reports received in the U.S. market between February 26, 2026 and
