Defect
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Rogue vehicles equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. Increased temperatures can break down the engine oil, which may cause the engine bearings to seize and become damaged, leading to engine failure.
Risk / consequence
Engine failure can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. A bearing failure may cause a breach in the engine block, allowing hot oil to be discharged, increasing the risk of an engine fire.
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software, inspect for diagnostic trouble codes, and test drive the vehicle, free of charge. The dealer may also inspect the oil pan for metal debris, and replace the engine if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 8, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R25E2 and R25E3. This recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 25V437. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning February 27, 2026.
Chronology of events
- August 2025
August 2025 through December 2025 – Following production countermeasure adoption in late October 2025, Nissan identified additional incidents post-countermeasure of bearing seizure on certain Rogue vehicles equipped with the 3(cid:0)cylinder 1.5L engine. Nissan also received three (3) Product Information Requests (PIRs) from NHTSA alleging incidents of bearing seizure, abnormal engine noise, difficulty starting, and/or engine stalling conditions on Model Year 2023-2024 Rogue vehicles.
- Feb 4, 2026
February 4, 2026 - Through continued investigation including engine teardown analysis, Nissan identified an additional contributing factor that may cause engine bearing seizures. High engine oil temperatures under certain operating conditions can degrade lubrication, potentially causing bearing seizure that may lead to engine damage and potentially engine failure. Nissan decided to conduct a voluntary recall campaign to remedy the potentially affected vehicles in the U.S. market. Nissan has confirmed a total of six-hundred ninety (690) warranty claims related to the subject condition. Nissan is not aware of any accident or injuries related to the subject condition.
