Defect
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2026 228i Gran Coupe, 228i xDrive Gran Coupe, and M235i xDrive Gran Coupe vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with rear lights that may not function properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, Lamps, reflective devices, and assoc. equipment."
Risk / consequence
A rear taillight, brake light, or rear turn signal light that functions improperly, increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the rear lights, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 2, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning March 27, 2026.
Chronology of events
- July 2025
In July 2025, various functional anomalies of rear lamps started to occur in Model Year 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe vehicles at a vehicle assembly plant. An engineering investigation was initiated. The rear lamp supplier, as well as sub-suppliers, were contacted. Initial evaluations included sub- components of the lamp assembly, and also the lamp control unit. Potentially suspect parts were shipped from the supplier to BMW for evaluation.
