Defect
Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022-2025 R1T and 2022-2026 R1S vehicles. The bolts that secure the second-row driver and passenger side seat belt retractor assemblies may be improperly tightened.
Risk / consequence
An improperly secured seat belt retractor may not adequately restrain the seat occupant, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy
Rivian will inspect and tighten the bolts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 2, 2026. Owners may contact Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261. Rivian's number for this recall is FSAM-1795.
Chronology of events
- Sep 16, 2025
On September 16, 2025, the Rivian Field Performance team was made aware that a Rivian R1T being examined by a Rivian service technician was equipped with an improperly secured seat belt retractor. From September 17, 2025, to January 8, 2026, Rivian conducted the investigation and identified the potentially affected vehicle population and no additional improperly secured seat belt retractors were discovered.

On January 8, 2026, Rivian, out of an abundance of caution, determined to conduct a voluntary safety recall of all potentially affected vehicles and has begun contacting customers via text and telephone to have the vehicles inspected and serviced, if necessary. As of the date of this filing, Rivian is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue in any market.
