Defect
The Heil Co. (Heil) is recalling certain 2021-2022 front end loader garbage trucks. The vertical welds on the automatic front loader (AFL) arm may be missing, causing the arm to crack and fall.
Risk / consequence
A falling arm increases the risk of injury.
Remedy
Heil will inspect and repair or replace the AFL arm as necessary, free of charge. All affected trucks were repaired by July 28, 2023. Owners may contact Heil's customer service at 1-866-275-4345.
Chronology of events
- Aug 24, 2022
On 8/24/2022 it was found through a spot inspection of new HalfPack arms going out of the plant, that a weld was missed between the arm cylinder brackets. This was brought to the attention of quality at this time. All arms were identified in the plant and a weld repair procedure was written on 8/25/2022. Production miss-interpreted the print. The print was clarified with production. All units shipped since then have had the weld installed. The potentially exposed population was assessed through production records. That list of units was inspected and repaired. The Heil Co. was acquired by Terex in the fall of 2024. After the acquisition, a compliance audit revealed that this should have been filed as a safety recall. This was discussed with NHTSA staff and a decision was file a part 573 report.
