Automatic Fire Suppression System May Short Circuit

Volvo Bus Corporation (Volvo Bus) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Volvo 9700 buses. Metallic debris within the electrical connectors of the Automatic Fire Suppression System (AFSS) may cause a short circuit, resulting in a false warning to the driver, an engine shutdown, and the release of chemical fire extinguishing agent in the engine compartment.

Risk / consequence

An unexpected engine shutdown increases the risk of a crash. Additionally, a disabled coach bus may require an evacuation procedure in an uncontrolled traffic situation, increasing the risk of injury to passengers.

Remedy

Prevost will inspect and remove any metallic debris from the AFSS connectors, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 28, 2025. Owners may contact Prevost's customer service at 1-866-870-2046. Prevost's number for this recall is SR25-85.

Chronology of events

1. Jan 7, 2025

   2025-01-07 Field report received involving a MY2025 Volvo Bus 9700 vehicle. The report indicated an unwarranted activation of the AFSS caused by metallic debris. Same day internal Volvo investigation was opened to identify the root cause.

2. Jan 14, 2025

   2025-01-14 Delivery Stop was issued at the Mexico manufacturing facility to stop the delivery of vehicles due to quality concerns.

3. February 2025

   February 2025 to April 2025 Case was presented on Volvo Product Safety Evaluation Committee (PSEC) on additional occasions to evaluate if there is a potential safety-related issue.
