Defect
Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2021-2025 XC40, 2022 V90, 2022-2025 S90, V90CC, C40, XC60, 2023-2025 S60, V60, V60CC, XC90, and 2025 EC40 and EX40 vehicles. The rearview camera image may not display when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Risk / consequence
A rearview camera image that does not display reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2025. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10320.

In April 2021 Volvo cars received the first report indicating camera is temporarily not available.
- Mar 24, 2025
On March 24th, 2025, NHTSA and Volvo cars had a meeting, where the issues with Camera temporarily not available were addressed.
- Mar 26, 2025
On March 26th, 2025, the investigation was escalated to the Critical Concern Action Process (CCAP). The issue was concluded as potentially critical and the Critical Concern Management Team (CCMT) initiated a technical investigation to conclude customer symptom, root cause etc.
- Mar 27, 2025
On March 27th, 2025, Volvo cars sent a letter to NHTSA committing to addressing the back-up camera software on all Icup vehicles.
- Apr 30, 2025
On April 30th, 2025, the technical investigation was completed, the CCMT team took the decision to start preparation and launch a recall.
