Defect

Bell Sports Inc (Bell) is recalling certain Scout Air helmets, sizes S and L. The helmets may lack proper penetration protection. As such, these helmets fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 218, "Motorcycle Helmets."

Risk / consequence

A helmet that does not provide adequate protection increases the risk of injury during a crash.

Remedy

Bell will replace the helmet or reimburse owners as necessary, free of charge. Owners may contact Bell's customer service at 1-800-216-9446.

Chronology of events

  1. Helmets were pulled from market by NHTSA and tested to FMVSS 218 standards. Size small helmets produced in 11/2022 and Large produced in 12/2023 were found to be noncompliant. All batch test data and cutomer service records were reviewed. Current production was also tested to FMVSS 218 to ensure latest production was safe.
