Defect

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2024 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 vehicles. The powertrain control module (PCM) and engine control modules (ECM) software may cause malfunction indicator lights to illuminate and a loss of drive power.

Risk / consequence

Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will reprogram the PCM and ECM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 19, 2024. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 7024J.

Chronology of events

  1. Mar 10, 2023

    March 10, 2023: Mazda received the first field report from outside the U.S. market and started an investigation.

  2. Mar 11, 2023

    March 11, 2023, ~ June 19, 2023: Mazda initiated an investigation, suspecting that the torque calculations may be a possible source. On May 23, 2023, Mazda received the first field report from the U.S. market, prompting further investigation.

  3. Jun 20, 2023

    June 20, 2023: Mazda implemented a mass production change with improved software in the powertrain control modules (PCM) and engine control modules (ECM).

  4. Jul 1, 2023

    July 1, 2023 ~ July 31, 2024: Mazda subsequently received 15 more U.S. market field reports. During the course of the investigation, other conditions were identified in which this defect could occur.

  5. Jan 10, 2024

    January 10, 2024: Mazda implemented various mass production changes with additional improved software in the PCM and ECM.

  6. Jan 24, 2024

    January 24, 2024: NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) notified Mazda of certain VOQs and field reports received alleging a loss of motive power in Mazda CX-90 vehicles located in the United States. Multiple discussions were held from February to October informing ODI of Mazda’s analysis of field information and ongoing investigations. Investigations included additional VOQs and field reports received during this period.

    June 20, 2024, and July 1, 2024: Mazda implemented various mass production changes with additional improved software in the PCM and ECM.

  8. Jul 2, 2024

    July 2, 2024 ~ October 15, 2024: Mazda engaged in the final stages of an investigation aimed at assessing the affected markets and vehicle populations.

  9. Oct 25, 2024

    October 25, 2024: Mazda held a Quality Audit Committee meeting to review all available information to date and approved a field action on subject MY2024 CX-90 and MY2025 CX-70 vehicles. As of October 25, 2024, Mazda is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this concern. Also, as of this date, 16 field reports have been received by the United States and its Territory markets.
