Defect

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2024-2025 IC Bus CE SBUS school buses equipped with Intellipark Park Valve Modules (PVM). The rubber ball seal in the PVM may fracture and cause a leak, which can result in park brake failure or unexpected park brake engagement while driving.

Risk / consequence

Park brake failure or unexpected park brake engagement while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the Intellipark PVM, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 01, 2024. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 24507.

Chronology of events

  1. Jan 5, 2024

    01/05/2024 – Bendix informs Navistar that a micro tear in a rubber ball seal was found during transition to a new supplier of that part. The effect of this tear was unknown at this time. Bendix stated they will perform durability testing and provide more details once complete.

  2. Jan 6, 2024

    01/06/2024 thru 04/18/2024 Bendix and Navistar meet regularly to receive updates on the status of the testing.

  3. Apr 12, 2024

    04/12/2024 – Bendix informed Navistar that the testing was completed. Bendix indicated that the tear was found to contribute to an early life failure of the PMV resulting in an excessive air leak. Bendix also indicated that its Product Integrity Committee will meet to review the issue.

  4. Apr 23, 2024

    04/23/2024 – Navistar initiates a ship hold of 799 units located at its manufacturing facility. 652 suspect PMVs were found on vehicles and replaced, establishing a clean point at the Tulsa Bus assembly plant.

  5. May 1, 2024

    05/01/2024 – Navistar receives Bendix’s defect report for 24E-034.

  6. May 7, 2024

    05/07/2024 – Navistar Engineering, Supplier Quality, Manufacturing and Product Safety finalize the suspect population.

  7. May 9, 2024

    05/09/2024 – Navistar declares a Safety Recall.
