Defect
Meritor, Inc. (Meritor) is recalling certain 10-16K and 18-23K front steer drive axles, part numbers FSD 8-16K and FSD 18. An insufficient amount of lubricant in the front steer drive (FSD) axle hubs may result in damage to the wheel bearings.
Risk / consequence
Damaged bearings can cause the wheel to separate and result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The remedy program will be completed by the vehicle manufacturers and provided free of charge. Owners may call Meritor's customer service at 1-866-668-7221. Meritor's number for this recall is C24AM.
Chronology of events
• 28AUG2024 – Wheel end bearing failure incident reported to OnTrac warranty team involving an International Motors vehicle . Meritor began investigating the issue.
• 30AUG2024 – Meritor issued an alert to CDBS Laurinburg, NC of a potential quality issue.
• 31AUG - 13SEPT2024 – Meritor reviewed similar units that remained in inventory and conducted training for the quality alert.
• 13SEPT2024 – Axle build sheets updated to reflect improved verification of grease application.
• 23SEPT – 11OCT2024 – Engineering reviewed and analyzed the issue and drafted technical position. Draft technical position reviewed by Engineering and Quality.
• 11OCT2024 – Engineering and Quality elevate the issue to Product Safety and Compliance for review.
- OCT2024
• 12 – 21 OCT2024 – Product Safety and Compliance reviewed technical analysis.
• 21OCT2024: Meritor began customer notification of potential that certain FSDs may have been assembled with insufficient grease in the wheel end and one reported failure on a vehicle built 11/13/2023 .
- DEC2024
• 22OCT – DEC2024: Meritor worked with customers as they followed their respective product safety and compliance process to determine the potential impact to the respective vehicle systems.
• 4NOV2024 – International Motors submitted a 573 Defect Information Report to NHTSA (24V830).
• 2DEC2024 – Paccar submitted a 573 Defect Information Report to NHTSA (24V903).
• 9DEC2024 – Based on the reports from International Motors and Paccar, Meritor filed this 573 Defect Information Report in accordance with 49 C.F.R. § 573.3(f).
