Cummins, Inc. (Cummins) is recalling certain X15 diesel engines with part number D103019BX03, Cummins X15 re-manufactured engines with part number DR7989-RX, Cummins X15 fuel pump barrel service kits with part number 631058000, 6310580PX, X15 fuel pump service assemblies, with part numbers 559463000, 559462500, 5594630PX, 5594625PX, and X15 overhaul kits, with part numbers 632445200RX and 632445500RX. The fuel pump barrels may fracture and cause a fuel leak, which can result in an engine stall.
Risk / consequence
An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Cummins will replace the fuel pump barrels, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 15, 2024. Owners may contact Cummins Customer Service at 812-377-5000. Cummins number for this recall is C7083.
Chronology of events
20July2024 – The first end of line test failure at JEP (Jamestown Engine Plant) occurs. 25July2024 – Determination made that the end of line failure was due to barrel fracture. 25July : 13Aug2024 – JEP quality is able to identify the potential defect after review of accumulated plant data. 14Aug2024 – Product safety leaders were informed. 19Aug2024 : 15Sept2024 – A product safety investigation is conducted, including performing a Product Safety Hazard Analysis to evaluate the potential safety risk. 16Sept2024 – The Cummins Product Safety Defect Board decided to initiate a safety campaign to address this defect.� To date, there have been no reports of fires, accidents or injuries related to this issue.
