Defect

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2023 Outback, Legacy, Ascent, and Impreza vehicles. The center support bolts for the driveshaft may loosen, resulting in the disconnection of the front end of the driveshaft.

Risk / consequence

Separation of the front end of the driveshaft increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will clean the bolt mounting surfaces of the center support brace and install new bolts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 20, 2023. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRN-23.

Chronology of events

  1. Apr 3, 2023

    April 3, 2023 – A low torque value of a fixing bolt of the propeller shaft center support brace was identified during an inspection sampling at the factory.

  2. Apr 4, 2023

    April 4, 2023 – Subaru opened an investigation with the supplier. Subaru initiated a 100% inspection of propeller shaft center support assemblies in response to the initial supplier observation that there may be an issue in the paint masking process.

  3. Apr 27, 2023

    April 27, 2023 – The supplier presented the findings of their investigation, including the scope of affected parts shipments.

  4. May 24, 2023

    May 24, 2023 – Subaru determined the broad scope of potentially affected vehicles.

  5. August, 2023

    June - August, 2023 – Subaru and the supplier conducted endurance-vibration testing on the propeller shaft center support and fixing bolts.

  6. Sep 14, 2023

    September 14, 2023 – For the entire population of potentially affected vehicles, Subaru is not aware of any field reports, warranty claims, or VOQs. However, out of an abundance of caution, Subaru decided to conduct a safety recall. Subaru is not aware of any reports involving accident or injury related to this condition.
