Defect
Wabash National Corporation (Wabash) is recalling certain 2024 DVDBHPC and DVCVHPC dry van trailers. The king pin was not welded properly, which can result in the king pin detaching within the upper coupler.
Risk / consequence
Unintentional movement of a detached king pin may cause a loss of trailer control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the upper coupler assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2023. Owners may contact Wabash customer service at 1-765-771-5404. Wabash National Corporation's number for this recall is B23002.
Chronology of events
- Mar 6, 2023
3/6/23, Noticed weld issue with robotic weld program on first shift. Removed suspect couplers from production. Edited and repaired computer program. Investigate last known change to computer program which was 2/21/23. Entered concern response to bring awareness to product safety team. 3/7/23, Safety team met, engineering determined this was not an immediate safety concern but should be addressed. 3/14/23, Safet Team determined to continue to investigate and meet with lead engineer. 3/16/23, Met with lead engineer. 3/28/23, Safety Team voted to discuss with outside counsel to determine what to escalate to the Safety committee. 3/29/23, Met with outside counsel, determined to escalate from a durability standpoint. 4/11/23, Safety team voted to escalate durability issue to the safety committee. 5/22/23, Safety committee voted to issue a voluntary safety recall. As of 5/22/23, Wabash knows of no warranty claims and no field or service reports related to this issue.
