Defect

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2010-2011 Range Rover Sport vehicles. The upper cover on the rear spoiler may detach from the vehicle.

Risk / consequence

If the spoiler detaches while driving, it can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spoiler assembly. If the spoiler has not delaminated, a new adhesive will be applied to fully secure the upper spoiler cover. If the outer surface of the rear spoiler has detached, been lost or damaged, a new spoiler will be installed. The repairs will be performed free of charge. Final Owner letters were mailed May 21, 2021. Owners can contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-369-1000. Land Rover's number for this recall is N499.

Chronology of events

  1. May 2020

In May 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requested Jaguar Land Rover investigate this matter following receipt of a Foreign Defect Report, PE 20-007 refers. The response to this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) was sent to the Agency in July 2020. On September 23, 2020 NHTSA representatives met with Jaguar Land Rover where the Agency asserted their view that components detaching from vehicles while in motion represented a risk to the safety of other road users and pedestrians. The Agency requested that Jaguar Land Rover conduct a vehicle recall campaign to rectify the vehicles. At the Product Safety and Compliance Committee (PSCC) meeting on September 29, 2020 the committee reviewed feedback from the Agency and concluded that although there was limited evidence of a safety defect pattern and trend in the US and Jaguar Land Rover had received no reports of accidents or injuries from the US market, the issue would be progressed to the Recall Determination Committee (RDC). The RDC reviewed all information on October 01, 2020 and determined in order to maintain good relations with the Agency a recall be conducted in the US to remedy the condition. There have been no reported accidents, injuries or fires as a result of this concern.
